They rose 28 cents, to $20.45, in late trading after news of the filing.

Dell founded the company in his University of Texas dorm room in 1984. It grew to become the world’s largest PC maker but was surpassed in 2006 by Hewlett-Packard Co.

The company boosted sales in the second quarter, but Dell told analysts it may have been too aggressive in cutting prices to compete against H-P in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
